On Tuesday, January 26, Twin Cities Orthopedics’ Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Kurt Anderson left for Port-au-Prince, Haiti knowing that all he would have to eat for the next week was the food he could carry with him.

He was the second physician from Twin Cities Orthopedics to travel to Haiti.

His trip was organized by the non-profit group, Partners in Health (PIH). Like many other doctors in the region, Dr. Anderson received an email from the group inviting him to jump on a plane and help the survivors of a devastating earthquake.

Although the invitation warned that the area could be dangerous and that conditions included limited water supply and sleeping in a tent, that did not stop Dr. Anderson.

In Port au Prince since Tuesday, Dr. Anderson has been working at a 250-bed hospital called St. Damien’s. The hospital is primarily supported by an organization called Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos (NPH) and is the only hospital in Haiti to provide free pediatric health care.

Dr. Anderson will be returning to Minneapolis on February 3rd. We’ll share more of his story after he returns.

Twin Cities Orthopedics’ Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Anthony Brown traveled to Haiti on January 20, 2010 to care for those injured during the January 12 earthquake.

Dr. Brown’s trip was orchestrated through Dr. Jeff Tidwell of Northfield Hospital in Northfield, Minn and the Hôpital Bon Samaritain (HBS) Foundation. The HBS Foundation supports the Hôpital Bon Samaritain in Limbe, Haiti.

According to the Foundation’s web site, the arrival of Dr. Brown and Dr. Anders Ulland of Metropolitan Surgical Associates in Robbinsdale, Minn. brought “supplies, medicines and hope to the victims of the Earthquake.”

The web site went on to report that “the team members immediately set up for surgery and performed an emergency C-Section that night [Wednesday]. Since then the team at HBS has been able to accomplish wound debridement, a below knee amputation, open reduction and internal fixations of fractures, non operative treatment of fractures (cast/splint) some with use of anesthesia and emergency C-sections. Surgery is ongoing as more patients receive word that we have trauma/orthopedic/general surgeons working and are showing up to receive help.”

Hôpital Bon Samaritain is located in Limbe, Haiti, 70 miles north of Port au Prince and 18 miles southwest of Haiti’s second largest city, Cap Haitian.

For more information about Dr. Brown and how you may help, please visit the HBS Foundation website at: http://www.hbslimbe.org/update.php.

One of the most underestimated methods of injury prevention is the simple process of warming up prior to physical activity. Warming up allows your body and muscles to prepare for the upcoming physical activity, helping to reduce the risk of a possible injury. Additionally, it helps your body to achieve the best possible results from the workout. Warming up also prepares your heart for the increased level of activity, which can reduce the level of stress that is placed on it.

Generally, you should start your warm up about 15 minutes prior to your exercise program. A successful warm up should begin with a short session of loosening exercises such as:

Forward, backward, and side bending

Twisting

Running in place

Leg rotating

Next, you should perform a light physical activity session lasting about 5 minutes. Possible activities include:

Walking

Jogging

Running on the spot

Aerobics

Light swimming

Lastly, do some basic stretches, focusing primarily on the parts of the body you will be using during your exercise. This prepares your muscles and tendons for the activity and assists in preventing them from becoming overstretched or strained.

One of the consequences of neglecting to warm up is that you force your muscles to perform without an adequate supply of oxygen. This allows lactic acid to accumulate, causing muscles to become prematurely fatigued. Cold muscles are also more prone than warm muscles to be injured or torn during a workout.

In addition to beginning your workout in an effective manner, it is also important to finish it properly. Cooling down is an effective way to maximize and complete your workout. Muscles are most receptive during this time. Through stretching exercises, your activity level can be gradually decreased, which assists in preventing future aches and stiffness.

The “Top Doctors” list was published in the January edition of Mpls. St. Paul Magazine. To compile the list, Mpls. St. Paul Magazine conducted a survey, in which they sent surveys to 5,000 randomly selected licensed doctors and nurses in the Twin Cities metro area. Survey participants were asked to name two doctors in several medical specialty areas “to whom would they send their loved ones to?” The nine Twin Cities Orthopedics physicians who were named to the “Top Doctors” list each received the top 15 percent of the votes from their peers.

Since Mpls St. Paul Magazine started the survey in the early ‘90’s, Twin Cities Orthopedics has had 30 doctors named to the list a combined 101 times. Congratulations to all of our winners in 2010!

Twin Cities Orthopedics physicians will now perform orthopedic surgery at the brand new Maple Grove Hospital which opened on December 30, 2009. TCO has been present in Maple Grove for the past one and a half years in the medical building adjacent to the new hospital.

North Memorial and Fairview partnered to create the new hospital that answers the needs of the northwest metro communities: Superior health outcomes delivered through excellent communications, care coordination and attention to the individualized needs of patients and their families. The hospital opened with 30 private patient rooms complete with modern amenities and the latest safety features and can be quickly expanded to 90 rooms. Orthopedics is one of several medical services offered at the new facility.

Offering patients a modern healing environment where intelligent, patient-centered design leads to the highest level of care, Maple Grove Hospital is the first new hospital built in the Twin Cities in a decade. The hospital believes personal choices and control over your environment help make a hospital experience more comfortable.

The construction of the new Twin Cities Orthopedics Medical Center in Edina is well on its way with plans to open during the second quarter of 2010.

The 75,000-square-foot facility is located just off of Highway 62 on West 65th Street between France Avenue and Valley View Road.

Twin Cities Orthopedics has served the metro area including Edina for nearly 60 years. The new medical center will bring together physicians from three Twin Cities Orthopedics clinics already located in Edina.

Twin Cities Orthopedics is committed to offering patients top-quality care at state-of-the-art facilities. The new medical center was designed with optimal patient care and patient experience in mind.

Patients in Edina will be able to come to one location for examinations, physical therapy, hand therapy, state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging, same-day surgery, orthotics, prosthetics and Med-X therapy for the back and neck.

In addition to construction in Edina, Twin Cities Orthopedics over the past four years has renovated or built new clinics in Burnsville, Coon Rapids, Fridley, Maple Grove, Shoreview and Waconia. Plans are also in the works to build a new location in Otsego, Minn.
